Your first steps into open source.
You do not need to be a developer. Start with one everyday task, ask a few useful questions, and try an app at your own pace.
01. Understand the idea
Open-source software makes its source code available under a license that permits specified uses, modification and sharing. That gives people opportunities to examine and improve it. It does not mean every app is free of charge, private by default or independently audited.
02. Choose for the task you have
- Name one job. Writing quick notes, planning reminders or organising files?
- Pick your essentials. Do you need offline use, export, reminders or synchronisation?
- Visit the official project. Check current requirements, license, costs and installation routes.
- Look at permissions and maintenance. Ask whether access requests make sense for the job.
- Compare two options. Start with our notes comparison, or browse the collection.
03. Try before you switch
Use a sample note or copied file first. Explore the settings, then make a backup and try restoring or exporting that sample. Keep the original data until you are confident the new workflow works.
Follow the developer’s documented installation route. If Android asks you to allow installation from a particular source, understand the permission before proceeding and turn it off afterwards if you no longer need it. Avoid lookalike download buttons and unrelated mirrors.
04. Understand our evidence
Our current app summaries are based on official project documentation checked on 15 September 2026. They describe features and questions to consider; they do not claim hands-on testing, malware scanning or a security audit. App behaviour, pricing and availability can change.
